We translate in real-time from a soundproof booth.
Best for… all-day events when time is of the essence.
Simultaneous interpreting demands huge concentration and excellent sound quality in order for interpreters to be able to listen, understand, translate, speak and check their own output, all at the same time.
For this reason, an interpreting booth is ideal, especially for events that last more than a few hours, such as conferences, congresses and summits, as they help to guarantee excellent sound quality for both interpreters and listeners.
If space is tight, interpreting booths can be located in a different room to where the main event is being held, and a video link set up inside the booth so that the interpreters can see the speakers. This visual reference is key to making sure we are able to do our very best.
I will be happy to liaise with the best audio companies on the island on your behalf. They will set up the booths on-site, and ensure a sound technician is on hand during the event.
Simultaneous without a booth
We translate in real-time using an Infoport or tour guide system.
Best for… shorter events or if you’re on the move.
Infoport and tour guide radio systems work in a similar way, equipping listeners with a receiver to listen to the translation in real time. Interpreters speak into a microphone and work in the same room as the main event, from a location where they can hear the original audio clearly and see the speakers.
This is a cheaper option than renting an interpreting booth, but it is more challenging for interpreters because they have to deal with extra background noise. For this reason it’s best suited for events that last only a few hours.
It’s also an ideal option for things like guided tours or factory visits, because it allows both interpreter and listeners to move between different spaces, and even walk and talk.
I will be happy to arrange rental of this equipment from our reliable partners here in the Canary Islands on your behalf.
We sit directly behind you, translating in real-time.
Best for… audiences of 2-3 people max.
If there are only one or two people at your event who don’t understand the language being spoken, then whispered interpreting could be the perfect option.
The interpreter sits right behind the listeners and interprets what is being said in real-time, in a low voice so as not to distract the other participants. The interpreter must be sitting close to the speaker in order to hear them clearly, and there should be minimal background noise.
For this type of interpreting there is no special equipment involved, so it is possible to move between different spaces. This makes it suitable for things like interviews, guided visits and short meetings.
We takes notes while listening and translate afterwards.
Best for… short speeches or small meetings.
Professional conference interpreters are trained in a specific note taking technique that allows us to record a speech lasting up to 10 minutes and then interpret it into another language. We can either do this at the end of the speech or in short chunks during pauses.
The interpreter needs to sit close to the speaker just in case they have any questions, and a hands free microphone so that they can have both hands free.
Because this type of interpreting is slower than simultaneous interpreting it only makes sense for things like short presentations, press conferences and negotiations.
